Tomatoes Au Gratin

1 ¾ Cup dry Italian-style breadcrumbs
4 large, fresh tomatoes, not pealed, cut in about ¼ “ slices
2 tsp. Sugar
Dash of salt
1/3 tsp. Dry mustard
2 cups (8oz) shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup cooked elbow macaroni (optional)
1/3 stick (1/4 cup) butter or margarine, melted

Grease bottom & sides of shallow 10-inch casserole.

Sprinkle 1/3 of the crumbs over bottom of pan.

Place 1/3 of the tomatoes in single layer on crumbs.

Combine; sugar, salt & mustard and mix well.

Sprinkle 1/3 of the sugar mixture on tomatoes.

Sprinkle 1/3 of the cheese on top of that.

If macaroni is used, sprinkle all of it on the cheese.

Repeat layers of crumbs, tomatoes, sugar mixture & cheese.

Drizzle butter over top breadcrumb layer before the last layer of tomatoes.

Bake covered in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes.

Uncover  & bake about 10 minutes longer.

Makes 4 to 6 servings.
